Air pollution in Spanish cities hits the world news

Velo-city Conference and Declaration of Seville will highlight bicycle as a major solution to reduce motorized traffic and air contamination

Dear editor, dear contact,

last week the air pollution in Madrid and Barcelona reached alarming levels, exceeding limits set by European legislation. In Seville, however, the winds of change have blown in a breath of fresh air.

This year’s edition of Velo-city, which takes place in Seville, Spain, March 23-25, 2011, shows how a change in a city’s transport model is possible when alternatives to motorized traffic are fostered.

Please find attached the fourth of a series of press releases about the event, the program and the players.

Women high on (w)heels!!

In Seville women on two (w)heels conquer the streets – dropping the walk, the bus or the car in exchange for a bike

Dear editor, dear contact,

March 8th marks the centenary of the very first International Women’s Day. Slowly but surely, the results of 100 years’ steady work on women’s rights are becoming visible.

In Seville, from a sustainable mobility perspective – women are also clearly in the lead.

In order to further promote, stimulate and convince even more women to change to a new way of mobility a major part of the program of the upcoming Velo-city conference, which takes place in Seville, Spain, March 23-25, 2011, will highlight Women Specific lectures.

Please find attached the fifth of a series of press releases about the event, the program and the players.

Velo-city in Seville: Pressing all the right buttons!

Drafting a framework for a “Cycling Economy”

With 900 participants across 47 countries and 5 continents, Guillermo (Gil) Peñalosa, Master of Ceremonies, officially opened the international ‘Velo-city’ cycling conference in Seville, Spain. Mr Peñalosa shared the stage with Manfred Neun, ECF president and Mr Alfredo Sánchez Monteserín the Mayor of Seville; Jesús Huertas García Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs Government of Spain; Mr José Juan Díaz Trillo Minister of Environment Regional government of Andalusia and Mr Antonio Rodrigo Torrijos First Deputy Mayor of Seville.

Among the high-profile speakers at the conference was Dr Gro H Brundtland, former Norwegian prime-minister and world-renowned author of the report “Our common future”, often referred to as the ‘Brundtland’ report.

Rephrasing a well-known slogan, she urged participants to “Act Globally, Think Locally” while delivering her key note speech.

She similarly highlighted how the local level must reflect on ways to improve the quality of life for its citizens. Recapping on speeches made by Spanish panellists, she cited the example of Seville being transformed into a more ‘human’ city.

“Above and beyond what all of us can contribute to more sustainable cities and other local communities, we also need to act globally[…]” she explained before emphasising that “In our globalized world, the threats we face are interconnected[…] That is why today, we must respond to Global Health challenges as robustly as we do to terrorism. To poverty and to environmental threats as robustly as we do to nuclear proliferation.” Her point of view mirrored the rising demand for cycling and cycling expertise worldwide.

Reflecting on what has been achieved since the 1980’s, Dr Brundtland stressed that there is “still hope”, yet much work is to be done in order to overcome the challenges of energy dependency, climate change, obesity and road safety. “There is no common future unless we invest in people, in all people, in their future health and well-being. Without it, there will be no hope for sustainable development, prosperity and peace”, she elaborated.

Other speakers at the conference noted that in light of growing global problems, it is time that cycling be used to help confront these challenges.

ECF president, Manfred Neun, underlined the global dimensions of transport, and how they form “part of the global problem”, concluding that “cycling must be part of the solution”. He also touched on the concept of the ‘Cycling Economy’ and how it is unfairly treated as being only small business, remaining an unfamiliar term within both industry and politics. He stressed that it was the opportune time to draft a framework for a “Cycling Economy”.

Mr Neun’s colourful presentation showed 9 ‘buttons’, which when pressed, outlined different solutions as well as opportunities to invest. Among these were energy efficiency, cycling tourism and electric assisted bicycles. His presentation re-iterated the message that citizens from cycling-friendly cities enjoyed a high quality of live, with governments reducing their expenditure and business prospering as a result.

“Investments in cycling create benefits across all sectors of society”, Neun assured the audience, before insisting that “it is now time for action, because action speaks louder than words”.

This call will be readopted in the Charter of Seville that will address participants in the upcoming International transport Forum participants in May 2011 in Leipzig, Germany. The Charter will be presented at the plenary Session on Friday.

For Manfred Neun, the ‘Cycling Economy’ has huge potential. It is an “investment that is required by society as a whole. It is needed more than ever and it is the framework we need in order to establish a sustainable global policy”. Mr Neun’s message was clear: “Let´s press the button drafting a framework for a ‘Cycling Economy’ ”.

Successful Velo-city2011 concludes with the signing of the Charter of Seville

From Spain to Leipzig to Vancouver – the message ‘Cycling makes Sense’ goes global

With an energetic stroke of the pen dignitaries and participants of the Velo-city 2011 conference signed the “Charter of Seville”. An important document and the closing act of the 17th successful international conference on cycling and cycling policies.

In May the “Charter of Seville” aspires to convince all Ministers of Transport that attend the International Transport Forum (ITF) in Leipzig of the fact that cycling simply makes sense.

Manfred Neun, ECF President, officially closed the Velo-city conference in Seville as he symbolically passed the Velo-city bike to the next hosting city Vancouver.

Celebrating the grand finale, around 6.000 people participated at the fifth Ciclovida with a bicycle parade throughout the city that coincided with the metropolitan bicycle day.

Please note that the full Velo-city 2011 participation list is now online
